I see this page finally got some love. I appreciate the changes made! The character feels more believable and sympathetic now, and more readers will be drawn in by it!

This post is to bump the Pinned thread for visibility. We have a few new members who haven't introduced themselves.

The Introductions subforum is, as all other subforums, always open to new threads!

"Well, I just crit the bed!"
— Me.

This draft went too long without critique. I am bumping this to make sure it is seen.

Hello, everybody!

We here at the Havok Guild would like to announce that we are, indeed, bringing the Guild Site back online with a few changes. Please pardon our dust as we make some necessary adjustments around the site.

Returning to the Project by Reverend FoxReverend Fox, 19 Dec 2017 17:34

As this is an active character, I am bumping this one time so it doesn't start to rot.

Please place your drafts in the sandbox and provide a link in your post instead of placing the entirety of your draft in the forum.
You can do so by clicking the [Options] link to the bottom right of your post, clicking [Edit], and cut-pasting your draft to your sandbox. Copy the link to your sandbox here with a brief explanation for the draft (which, by the way, what you have to introduce the draft is sufficient).
Doing so helps keep the forums organized and gives you an easier place to make possible edits.

Side Note: Once you get that done, I will critique your draft. I can already tell you that it has a great thing going for it!

This is an idea I have been toying around with for a while. I made it specifically about a druid with a wyvern as a companion animal but I suppose the concept could be adapted for other animals as well. My main though when conceptualizing the idea was that beastmaster rangers are super lame at higher levels. Once you hit level 8-10 your animal companion is just a liability in every encounter, so I wanted to come up with something that would continue to get more powerful as you level up. I also just think that a beastmaster fits the druid class better than the ranger.
This is just a rough outline, really I just copied the beastmaster section from the PHB for the level progression. I'd like input on balance, in particular concerning hit points. I am thinking that the wyvern should start with 12 HP at LVL 3 and you roll for it's additional HP every level just like you do for your PC, but I am not married to the idea if anyone else has a better idea. I'd also like some input on keeping things balanced at higher levels. Once you hit LVL 15 with this wyvern as your companion, you can do some serious damage, so I gave the poison stinger a regeneration roll, like a dragon's breath weapon. The way I have worked balance is by creating different stat blocks for different levels. As you gain experience, so does your wyvern, it starts as a Baby Wyvern at LVL3 and advances to a Young Wyvern, Adult Wyvern and Legendary Wyvern as you progress through the levels.
Balance feed back would be appreciated, as well as creative feed back.

Admin Edit:
Went ahead and put the draft itself in a collapsible to clean things up a bit. No big. :)

Wyvernmaster Druid by Plus5NecroPlus5Necro, 04 Sep 2017 05:13

Ah, personally, I'm of the mind that music and sound effects at the table can go far in enhancing the mood, tension, and immersion. However, I'm also of the mind that a good disconnect can be used every so often to throw off the players.

For example, there's a serious moment being played out, and suddenly the villain walks in with his two henchmen. The soundtrack could go from soft piano music to swelling orchestra.. or suddenly "Where the Hood At?" by DMX to throw everyone off their guard.

Re: Music at the Table? by Reverend FoxReverend Fox, 03 Sep 2017 04:55

In my opinion i'm kind of in the mind set that it can be bad ass to have music at the table and have seen it done well. though in other situations it can completely ruin the moment if something is off and can throw a player off in a good personal moment. When it comes to sounds it could be very useful in most occasions but there are some people that are easily thrown off by repeating sounds.

Re: Music at the Table? by GeodogsixGeodogsix, 06 Aug 2017 08:13

Just curious, when it comes to PnP, where does everyone fall on having music and sounds at the Table? Do you prefer non-invasive ambient sounds or soft music like Enya or Enigma? Or do you prefer raucous, kick-ass metal like Dio, Metallica, and so on? Or are your preferences situational such as Techno/Industrial for Sci-fi, Melodic/Neo-classical for Fantasy, and so on?

I fall pretty squarely into the latter category. If I'm involved in a Shadowrun or Cyberpunk 2020 game, I generally listen to bands like Celldweller, Circle of Dust, Angeldust, Argyle Park, Blue Stahli, Scandroid, and things like that — Very Industrial music.

However, the music/ambience has to match the mood of the situation itself. You wouldn't necessarily listen to Through the Fire and Flames by DragonForce during an emotional moment or Only Time by Enya during an epic battle1.

Discuss this with your DM! See if they have anything they can bring to the table to add to the ambience.

I think The Dark Tower has a lot of potential as a PnP RPG due to its setting, environment, characters, and history. What do you think?

(I'll expand on this if people are interested in the topic.)

"Well, I just crit the bed!"

Over the past entries I've done for Rules Talk, it's been pretty clear that I hold a certain disdain for certain videogames, but here are the top three games I hate the most per genre.

  • Resident Evil: Biohazard
    • Because… Think about what you did, Konami! Go sit in the corner and think about what you did!
  • Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
    • Ooh, jump scares… ~yawn~
  • Doom (2016)
    • It was nostalgic. Nostalgia gets boring after a while.

  • GTA 3-5, not including San Andreas
    • Repetitive gameplay with no risk or challenge, no world-building, and no character development.
  • Call of Duty/Battlefield
    • Nothing new is really added to these. It's just more of the same.
  • Just Cause 2/3
    • They took an interesting concept from the first in the series and expanded it… in the wrong way. The third was just a pile of shit.

  • The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
    • Static world. Boring NPCs. Not-fucking-dragon dragons. Boring overall main quest. Nothing matters.
  • Fallout 3, NV, 4
    • As above… Think about what you did, Bethesda!
  • Final Fantasy 11-current
    • What in the fuck is SquareEnix doing?

So, what are your most hated games?

To be honest mine is from when me and the Reverend did a lot of geocaching . Geodog is was my nickname for it. Six is just six i honestly have no reason for it except not liking to put numbers in my names and would rather just type it out.

I feel this topic is interesting enough to get bumped for visibility so here's a Rod of Resurrection for it.

EDIT: Slight grammar fix. Wireless keyboards at range suck.

Okay thank you very much grey. I'll get to work on implementing your critiques when I can. To be honest I agree completely on all of these critiques so thanks for the help.
